IT WAS SO CLOSE!
It was so close! Scotland played fantastic golf today to beat defending champions Ireland by 5 - 4 on the final day of the Senior Women's Home Internationals. Ireland, Scotland and England all won two of their three matches, but it was games won that counted and Ireland pipped both Scotland and England to the title by winning 15 games to their 13.5.
Scotland's hopes of finishing in second place were then dashed by a tortuous count-back which saw them finish 3rd. Wales were 4th.

Morning Foursomes
Scotland 2 Ireland 1
Davidson & Wood lost to Webb &Wickham 5&4

ELAINE IS SVLGA CHAMPION
In her first year in seniors' golf, Midland Vets Champion, Elaine Moffat, today played scintillating golf over the Blairgowrie Lansdowne course to win the SVLGA Championship.
On a cold, frosty morning Elaine made no mistakes in her 4 & 3 semi-final win over fellow Senior Scottish Internationalist, Sheena Wood (North), and in glorious Autumnal weather in the afternoon final Elaine was in a class of her own playing sub-par golf and overwhelming her opponent, Jennifer Bryans ( East) by a 6 & 5 margin.
Other success for Midland was Caroline Henderson's 3rd place for the Wee Course Cup, played on Monday. Janice Lang and Mary Miller (Blairgowrie) won the Beddows Quaich on Tuesday.

A PLEA FROM YOUR CAPTAIN
Ladies, like me as a member of Midland Vets, many of you will have enjoyed many years of friendly, pleasurable golf at lovely, varied venues all very well organised by our secretaries and committees. Everything is done for us and we just need to turn up and play. We are lucky to be members of such a thriving Association. For this to continue, however, we need those who are able to help to come forward.
Our secretary, Margaret Hunter, retires at our AGM on 17th October and we urgently need someone to replace her. Please do not be put off by Margaret's super-efficiency! All that is needed is a little organisational skill, a little time, and a wish to see our association continue to provide the benefits to its members it does today. Some knowledge of the workings of the website would be helpful but this is not difficult to learn or to do. If your current Captain was able to learn the basics, then anyone can!
Anyone taking on the role will be able to ease herself into it without worrying about next year's competitions. Margaret has done all that work and all venues for next year are booked.
The Divisional matches are the sole responsibility of the Captain and there is no work for the secretary involved in these.
This year, in anticipation of Margaret's retirement, a few changes were made to the way we work in an effort to lighten the secretary's workload and the committee will continue to look at further ways of achieving this. Now, each of the four competition meetings has a Convenor who is responsible for the competition from beginning to end - taking in the entries, liaising with the Treasurer, doing the draw and posting it on the website, running the competition on the day, and posting the scores and results.
Please be assured that the role of secretary is not as daunting as it might first appear and anyone offering to fill the post will have an excellent guide in Margaret Hunter who is happy to go over what is required.
Ladies, please think about it and if you wish to be our secretary please contact Margaret or me or, indeed, any committee member and we will take it from there.
By the way - a perk of the post is a guaranteed place in the SVLGA's September meeting at Blairgowrie. There's an incentive!

FROM THE SECRETARY
Ladies, while we are all enjoying the heatwave, and basking in balmy evenings, your committee is already planning ahead for the Autumn Meeting at Falkirk Tryst and the AGM in October at Ladybank.
This year Margaret Tough will succeed Lorna Bennett as Captain, and Margaret is actively seeking a Vice-Captain, who, according to the Constitution, must be elected from P & K.
Lyn Fleming retires from office as representative for Stirling and Clackmannan, after 3 years in office, and I retire as Secretary, having completed my 3 year term in office.
So, are there ladies out there prepared to come on committee and take over these positions? I have written up a sort of Job Description for the position of Secretary, which you can read below. All venues for 2019 are already booked, and anyone taking on the post will have loads of help and support. Do please think about this and advise our Captain, Lorna Bennett, if you are interested in joining the Committee. If you would like to phone me, to discuss the role, I will be happy to help.
MIDLAND VETS SECRETARY'S ROLE
Membership
Maintain Membership list at agreed numbers. Keep members details up to date
Applications for Membership - acknowledge receipt of forms, add to waiting list, usually done by email. Resignations come at the beginning of the year. When places become available, write to applicants to offer a place. If accepted, send out a Welcome letter, Fixture List and details of how to pay subscription.
As subscriptions come in (payment being made online, by cheque or cash at the AGM to the Treasurer) liase with the Treasurer to keep Membership renewals updated.
Competition Venues
Each area of Midland Vets Division should, if possible, host one Meeting per year, and one area will have two. There is a list of past courses and dates played in the files. Members will suggest venues for 2020 at the AGM, the Committee will discuss these, with the Captain having the final say.
Start booking the courses for 2020 in Spring/Summer 2019, by that time Clubs have their 2020 Fixture Lists and dates in place. Details of what we pay, times requested, etc are all in the files.
Matches
We play 3 Divisional Matches a year against North, East and West. The Captain organises these, she books the venues, picks the Team and does a report for the Blog. Assist if required.
Fixture Card
Prepare a draft of the Fixture Card and order printing. For the past few years we have used online printer Solo Press. There is a file on how to do this in the main files. If you prefer, you can use another printer.
In recent years we have posted out the bulk of the Fixture cards in January, some can be taken by committee to deliver to Clubs, but with our area being wide, and people living in smaller towns/farms, we have posted out, it also avoids Fixture Cards lying around Locker Rooms for weeks.
We have a database of Members' names and addresses, and a supply of address labels, these can be run off on computer. Buy stamps and envelopes as required, claim all expenses from the Treasurer.
Web-site
Keep Midland Vets web-site up-to-date with news, competition draws, results, etc
Competitions
There are 4 Meetings a year, each Meeting has a Convener, she handles the entries, payments, & Draw. Scoring for these competitions is done on the Vets computer. It is not difficult! The results are then published on HandicapMaster and automatically sent to CDH.
Members can access Master scoreboard on the web-site, to see full results of Meetings.
Our computer
We have an excellent HP computer where all our files are held and which we use for scoring. Software for Master Scoreboard is loaded on our computer and each year we are given a code by the SVLGA, who hold the license. Committee members can access the files by signing in.
AGM & Prize-giving
The AGM is held in October and rotates between each area. A list of past venues is in the files. Liase with the venue re price, arrangements for Meeting, lunch, etc. 2020 AGM will be S & C.
Ensure all trophies are collected and engraved in time for the AGM. A Committee member can do this.
Liase with the Treasurer re Prize-Vouchers. The Treasurer orders and fills out Vouchers.
SVLGA Championships at Blairgowrie
There is a separate file on this event in the main files. Main job is to organise the ballot of entries

ELAINE MOFFAT WINS SCOTTISH SENIORS' TITLE
Elaine Moffat (St. Regulus), who won the Midland Vets Championship at Kinross on 19th June completed a wonderful double when she won the 2018 Scottish Senior Ladies' Championship at Prestwick St. Nicholas G.C. on Friday,29th June. As with the Midland Vets Championship, it was the first time Elaine had played in the event.
Elaine's performance throughout was classy. She qualified comfortably in tied 5th position after rounds of 76 and 77 and eased past current Senior Internationalist, Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire), by a 4&3 margin in the first round of the match play. In the quarter final she disposed of South African visitor, Sonja Bland, by the bigger margin of 5&4 before going on to dominate her semi final match against a tough opponent in former Scottish Champion and Curtis Cup player, Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool), emerging victorious by 3&2 and setting up a final against current Senior Internationalist and last year's runner-up Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies). Elaine got off to a great start in the final with an eagle at the 4th hole and was two up after seven holes. Sheena fought back and not only eliminated the two hole gap but went ahead with a birdie at the 12th. Elaine's reputation as a great match player has been earned over many years and it was no surprise when she responded to the challenge with her own birdie at the next hole. A bogey by Sheena at the 14th followed by another birdie by Elaine at the 15th restored her two hole lead and although Sheena cut that to one with a brave birdie at the 17th, a safe par 3 at the 18th was enough to give Elaine victory and the Championship title by 2 holes.
Congratulations to Elaine on a great achievement.

WINNING CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT FOR ELAINE
Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) today won the Midland Vets Championship at the Montgomery course, Kinross with a 2&1 victory in the final over Dianne Watson (Leven GS) and Elaine will now represent Midland Vets in the S.V.L.G.A. Championship at Blairgowrie on 23d and 24th September.
In the morning's semi-finals, Elaine defeated Linda McDonald (Ladybank) in a lovely match and the winning margin of 5&4 did not fairly represent how well Linda played.
In the second semi-final, Dianne beat defending Champion, Fiona de Vries, (St.Rule) by 7&6 - Dianne's amazing putting being just too much for Fiona to overcome.
The afternoon's final was played at a fast pace in dry, breezy conditions and was a pleasure for the small band of caddies and supporters to watch. Elaine took an early lead with a birdie 4 at the 3rd hole and was 2 up after the 5th. Although Dianne won the 6th hole, Elaine won back the 8th and increased her lead to 3 after 10 holes and this remained the position after 13 holes. Dianne's fight back started at the par 3 14th hole with an excellent birdie followed up by an even better one at the par 5 15th but the door which had opened slightly was promptly closed again when Elaine birdied the par 5 16th hole with a 3 wood second shot which was straight out the top drawer. A stunning tee shot by Elaine at the par 3 17th hole meant certain victory for her although Dianne made a brave attempt to prolong the match by almost holing her 35 yard pitch.
Well done to both ladies for providing such an entertaining contest with many excellent shots and congratulations to Elaine our new and worthy Champion.

WEST VETS VICTORIOUS IN INTER-DIVISIONAL TROPHY
Captain Lorna presents the Trophy to West Vets Captain, June |
Today at very warm and sunny Cochrane Castle Golf Club the strong West Vets team prevailed over the Midland Vets team and won the Inter-Divisional Trophy by 5.5 points to 1.5 points.
The Midland points all came in halved matches by the top three players, Millie Douglas, Alison Houston, and Joyce Murdoch - all of whom battled hard after being on the back foot for most of their matches. In the fourth match Emma Wilson was up against a fit and long-hitting opponent who gave little away and Liz Fertacz and Lyn Murray were both out of luck in their matches in which a little local knowledge of this lovely course would have helped greatly and might have made a difference to their result. Bringing up the rear our Secretary, Margaret Hunter, was somewhat handicapped by an un-cooperative trolley. It was late in the round before it was replaced and although Margaret responded with immediate par figures, it was not enough to save her from defeat.
Everyone enjoyed the course which was in lovely condition as well as the copious clubhouse food and, of course, the friendly company of the West Vets. Congratulations to them and we will surely have better fortune next year. RESULTS (Midland names first):
Millie Douglas halved with Helen Faulds
Alison Houston halved with Chris Fowler
Joyce Murdoch halved with Annabel Kane
Emma Wilson lost to Caroline King 3&2
Liz Fertacz lost to Liz Hale 4&3
Lyn Murray lost to Marion Stewart 6&5
Margaret Hunter lost to Karen Maxwell 5&4
A lovely day and spirited golf enjoyed by both Teams. |

MIDLAND VETS JUST COME UP SHORT IN MATCH AGAINST EAST VETS
Lorna Bennett congratulates East Captain, Caroline Kinnaird |
The Midland Vets team just failed to wrestle the aptly named Friendship Quaich from the East Vets in their annual match today at the delightful Liberton golf course in the centre of Edinburgh.
In perfect conditions,Midland's Gillian Wallace and Elsie Hutcheon both played well in scoring comfortable wins. The middle order matches were very closely contested and the destiny of the trophy was left in the hands of the last match on the course between Midland's Sarah Walker and East's Jane Herd. All square playing the 18th, Jane's nerves were tested when she was faced with a tricky 6 foot putt to win the hole and the match. She was up to the task. The putt was sunk and with it Midland's hopes of winning the Quaich.Well done and congratulations to the East Vets.
RESULTS (Midland names first):-
Gillian Wallace beat Sal Shepherd 6&4
Dorothy Ford lost to Sue Penman 6&5
Karen Burns halved with Susan Rennie
Margaret Tough halved with Morag Wardrop

IRISH SENIOR LADIES WIN MARY McKENNA TROPHY
Today at Royal Belfast G.C. the Irish Senior Ladies' Team emphatically regained the Mary Mckenna Trophy from the Scottish Veteran Ladies' Golf Association Team winning the annual match by 10 points to 2 points.
The Scots had a mountain to climb after losing yesterday's Four ball matches 3.5 points to 0.5 point with Midland Vets' Champion,Fiona de Vries, along with her West Vets partner,Lesley Lloyd, being the pair to earn the halved match. In today's singles - the order of which is drawn out of a hat rather than placed by the Team captains - the Scots fought hard but found themselves losing out by 6.5 points to 1.5 points. The sole Scottish winner was Midland Vets' former Champion,Lorna McKinlay, who scored an excellent win over the experienced and very powerful Laura Webb.
Bad luck to the Team in losing the Match but very well done to our Midland Vets ladies for playing some great golf and bringing home the points.
